For small production runs or high precision parts, machined plastics offer an attractive alternative to the costs of injection molding. When the part is ready or appropriate for high-volume runs, machining is used to create the aluminum, steel or Beryllium Copper mold (tool) for the injection equipment.
Many plastics materials are also quite suitable for CNC and other forms of machining. Abrasive machining, or grinding, can be used to create smooth or flowing bends. Standard machining such as milling, turning, and drilling are also used with plastics.
Tooling such as: lathes, CNC machining centers, saws, drills, and special purpose machines are all used with plastics to create borings, gun drillings, tappings and milled parts with cavities.
